Early Life And Education

Dr. Seth Sengretsi was born on the 17th of March, 1953 to Togbe Fosuhene III, chief of Wusuta, Anyinabase and Madam Abena Badu of Hoeme, Wusuta, both of blessed memory. He spent his early years at Papase with his mother which earned him the nickname Papase on his return.

He started his education at E.P. School in Wusuta, both primary and middle schools. He finished in 1967 and gained a scholarship to St. Paul’s Secondary School in Denu, from 1967 – 1972. He continued his sixth form at St. Augustine’s College between 1972 – 1974 and from there to the University of Ghana Medical School. He graduated in 1980.

During his time at the University, there was a strike by lecturers and the university was closed down for several months which found him teaching at Datus Prep. School for some time. Dr. Seth did his housemanship at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital from 1980 – 1981. He then went on to work at the Presbyterian Hospital in Bawku for 3 years.

Whiles there, he got the opportunity to sharpen his skills as they did a lot of surgeries and interacted with other doctors from abroad. Whiles in Bawku, he got married to his wife whom he had met earlier in Accra. He returned to Korle-Bu in 1984 to start his postgraduate training.

Foreign Training and Work

In 1988, he got the opportunity to travel to Glasgow, Scotland to continue his postgraduate training at the Queen Mother’s Hospital and at the Western Infirmary. After he qualified (M.R.C.O.G), he worked with the Sterling Royal Hospital for 2 years to gain more experience.

Dr. Seth returned to Ghana in 1993 and worked with the Agogo Hospital from 1993 to 1995. He moved to Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital the same year he left Agogo. He worked as a specialist (gynaecologist and obstetrician) at the O & G department.

He also joined the School of Medical Sciences (SMS), KNUST as a lecturer. He loved his work as a teacher and trainer of young doctors. He also did training programmes for midwives in several hospitals.

He was a fellow of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and the West African College of Surgeons where he was an examiner.

Other Activities

Seth also run a private clinic, Sedom Clinic, where he offered ultrasound services. At that time, he was the only private person offering that service in the Ashanti Region.

He was a very energetic and generous person who didn’t seem to get tired. He did his normal work at the Hospital, used some of his free time to run his clinic, played tennis several times a week and travelled to the Volta Region once a month to see his parents when they were alive.

Whenever he was going to his village, he carried a certain bag that contained drugs and other supplies, a mini chemical shop! All his family members and friends who had one complaint or the other would come to him for treatment and he did his best to satisfy everyone. In spite of all these, he still found time to be with his family.

He loved tennis and the socializing that comes with it. Holidays and weekends found him very early at the tennis court. When he became the chairman of his tennis club, Ashanti Club, he sponsored a lot of changes that made the club better.

Health Issues

In the year 2007, Seth suffered a heart attack which landed him at the Cardio Thoracic Centre in Accra. After about a month of treatment he was discharged. The following year, he bled into his brain and had brain surgery at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.

After that, he had one challenge or the other which saw him in and out of hospital several times in Kumasi. The family moved down to Accra and continued the treatment but his condition deteriorated gradually.

On the 1st of December, 2021, he didn’t feel well so he was taken to the Ridge Hospital but he could not survive and passed on to glory. He is survived by a wife, 3 children, 4 grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, and many family relations.

The family has lost a son, father, brother, husband and friend.
